Greg is a Chartered Engineer in Mott MacDonald’s Buildings and
Infrastructure business in Dubai where he is
responsible for the mechanical and electrical team. He has
twenty-five years experience in building and process engineering
comprising four years with contractors and twenty-one years with
consultants. He is involved in the design of the built environment,
advice on the building form, system analysis and planning. Greg has
a particular interest in energy conservation and hydronics.
“I have been very fortunate in my career working in a job I
really enjoy with some very talented engineers on some very
technically challenging projects. I have worked in multi-discipline
project teams in the UK , Europe ,
the Middle East and South East Asia
taking projects from early discussions with clients, local
authorities, architects, cost consultants and planners often
through concept and design to completion."
“In today’s market one of the major challenges we face is
delivering projects to a very tight deadline and this means the
need for teamwork, problem solving and checking becomes ever
more important. But you still need to make time for the thought
process and analysis so you know the decisions you are making are
technically correct. Safety and energy conservation are always in
our thoughts and work process.”
Greg has been active in engineering committees including the design
of services for seismic areas, required in certain parts of SE
Asia. He is currently working with the District Cooling Committee
in Dubai to share and promote energy efficient solutions. He also
co-authored the Corporation of London’s report for the
Sustainability of Tall Buildings in the capital.
“As engineers we have technical responsibility for some very
large and innovative projects and so need to keep up to speed with
all the developments taking place in our profession. Working for a
large company such as Mott MacDonald with the resources and
specialist expertise that it provides, enables us to do that. We
are also supported technically by our British Institute, the
Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), which
means we have guidance, can share knowledge and keep up with
industry developments.”
Some of Greg’s most challenging projects include the large seawater
cooling systems he worked on in Hong Kong, the Qatar Academic
Complex in Doha in conjunction with UNESCO in France, Embankment
Place over Charing Cross Station in the UK, and the concept work on
the infrastructure and cores of the Fiat Lingotto renovation in
Turin, Italy.
“Working in Asia was very challenging as the
problems were very different from those in the UK
where we take utilities for granted. Suddenly the building
engineering was secondary and the challenges were how we generate
power, get water to the site and remove waste.”
Away from the office Greg likes to ski and is a life long Chelsea
supporter, so he knows all about winning ways!
